How Can I Check To See If Antivirus, Firewall & Auto Updates Are All Working Without Security Center For Xp?

I have McAfee antivirus, but can’t open it, but when I talked to a Dell tech he told me not to worry that I can’t open it & not to mess with it, that it’s working fine. So I never need to do an antivirus scan on my computer?
1) How to check firewall,antivirus & auto updates are running?
2) Don’t need to do antivirus scans on my computer?
