Is It Safe For Me To Download Internet Explorer 8 Without An Antivirus On My Computer?

Is it safe for me to download IE 8 anyways, just as I would download (for example) a security update or something like that? It popped up finally in the Windows Update on my computer and I would really like to know. Thank you for your help!
NO! use firefox instead!
It should be safe but if I were you, I would get Avast from download.com. One of the top free anti-viruses out there. You should not be unprotected.
